ACT secures first mover advantage in global renewables boom

The ACT Government’s decision to step up its renewable energy ambition will create jobs and boost the economy, the Australian Wind Alliance says.

The ACT has brought forward its target to power the Territory with 100 per cent renewable electricity to 2020. It means Canberra will be fully powered by clean energy within the next four years.

Australian Wind Alliance national coordinator Andrew Bray says moving quickly to a clean energy economy is in line with the community’s desire for effective climate change action.

“Moving quickly to 100 per cent renewable energy will lock in for Canberrans the cheapest wind power prices Australia has seen, creating jobs and boosting the economy at the same time,” Mr Bray said.

“The ACT Government is showing that grasping the opportunities of climate change can deliver cheap power for decades to come.

“This is a historic announcement that puts the ACT Government at the forefront of the world’s transition to clean energy and lays down the gauntlet to the federal and other state governments to fully embrace the global renewable energy boom.”
